In a article from This Old House, Ted Goodnow, kitchen design contractor for the “Manchester House”, makes some very salient points about kitchen remodel and renovation projects.

One of the best is what he calls the “Power of 10”.In other words, erasers are significantly cheaper than wrecking balls! Making mistakes on paper, or in a design studio, will save you a remarkable amount of money and frustration on any remodeling project, be it your kitchen, your bathroom, or a new outdoor cooking area.

In the article, Goodnow describes his theory; “I like to say that good up-front planning is the power of 10. By that I mean, if it costs a dollar to plan your kitchen well on the drawing, it will cost $10 to fix it in the shop if you don’t — and it will cost $100 to fix your kitchen if you don’t make the changes until you’re on the job site. This is a good mantra to keep in mind when embarking on virtually any kitchen project.“

In other words, erasers are significantly cheaper than wrecking balls! Making mistakes on paper, or in a design studio, will save you a remarkable amount of money and frustration on any remodeling project, be it your kitchen, your bathroom, or a new outdoor cooking area.

Kitchen and bathroom designers are intimately acquainted with all of the little snags that can sabotage your project, and how to avoid them. Their input early on in a remodeling project can be the difference between a seamless remodel and a regretful disaster.

Perhaps even more important is having designers and contractors who can communicate and collaborate effectively. At HomeSource, our designers and installers are all part of the same team and have communication down to a science.

Here at HomeSource, we’ve seen a surge in interest in renovation and remodeling projects. And with good reason. While it may be a tough time to buy or sell a home, there’s tremendous value in improving the design and layout of your existing home.

There’s no question that a bathroom remodel or kitchen renovation will improve the resale value of your home. But there’s no return-on-investment calculation for making your current home more usable and more suited for your needs.

Renovations can be disrupting, no doubt. But with the gorgeous Spring we have coming in Western North Carolina, now’s the time to plan on firing up the grill as your amazing new kitchen takes shape.

Thank goodness we have the climate to make outdoor cooking not only a pleasant proposition, but an enviable one. Dinner and drinks on the back deck while pondering the debate over marble or granite, anyone?

Dreaming of a new kitchen can be overwhelming. New ideas abound in kitchen design and technology. The magazines seem to always have new products and designs. It can be hard to keep up.

Fortunately, we’ve made it easy for you. For a look at all the latest in kitchen and bathroom design ideas, take a look at The Design Center. We have a phenomenal team of designers who can help you shape the kitchen or bathroom you’ve always dreamed of.

“Going Green” is more than a trend. It is a sustainable lifestyle choice for more and more homeowners each year. Sustainable green building practices are also economically viable ways to construct new homes.

HomeSource Real Estate and Construction is an active member of numerous organizations that support green building practices right here in Asheville, and through the U.S.

One specific organization that HomeSource is proud to call our regional partner is the Western North Carolina Green Building Council.

WNCGBC is a 501C3 non-profit organization whose mission is to promote environmentally sustainable and health conscious building practices through community education.

HomeSource chooses to be a member of the WNCGBC because the organization provides us with the knowledge and insight into implementing the most efficient means of lessening the impact that home construction has on our natural environment.

Think about this – In the United States, buildings account for:

* 39% of total energy use
* 68% of total electricity consumption
* 30% of landfill waste
* 38% of carbon dioxide emissions
* 12% of total water consumption

Through ongoing educational resources, HomeSource utilizes it’s affiliation with the Green Building Council to create new opportunities for our customers.

Check out current green building incentives at the Western North Carolina Green Building Council website.
